April 27th:

1810 – Ludwig Van Beethoven composes Fur Elise.

1948 – A major rail strike country-wide was due to start at midnight with much of the rail network closed down across the US.

1974 – USA calls for impeachment of president Nixon.

1994 – South Africans of all races vote for the first time for Nelson Mandela to be their next president.

2005 – The world’s largest double-deck airliner commercial jet took flight for the first time.
